  • Running with eyes wide open

    Written by Cindy / on 01/11/2011 / 0 Comments

Why do you run or jog or walk? For me, it is a combination of euphoric feelings. I'm happy to be alive. Happy that I am healthy and getting healthier every time that I do something positive. As I like to quip, I'm still in a vertical and upright position (all four foot ten of me).

And when I run with the NIH Health's Angels Running Club, I cherish the break in my day when I am inspired by the gazelles and the perseverts (I just made that up: one who perseveres). What a hoot to run around Bethesda touristing the ..

  • If you can't run, read about running

    Written by Cindy / on 09/01/2010 / 1 Comment

    Hey everyone,

I just started a new book--Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. It is pretty entertaining so far. I lent it to my husband to read and put a hold (number 11 in line) on a copy from the Frederick Co. library system for me to read.

It talks about the amazing Tarahummara indian runners in the Copper Canyon of Mexico (among other tales). Has anyone tried chia seeds or a chia energy drink? Notice any difference than swigging gels?

Let me know if you read the book as it would be fun to talk about it. And, especially, let ..

  • Looking for runners who ski

    Written by Jaime / on 08/20/2010 / 0 Comments

    Hi all,

I'm hoping to find some NIH runners who also like to ski.  If you are one and might be interested in doing some local skiing this year, I'm attempting to form a Night Club.  I created another group site (http://nihski.groupsite.com/main/summary) which has some info now, and should have more as the season approaches.

    Thanks, Jaime

  • Got to love running new routes...August 3, 2010

    Written by David / on 08/04/2010 / 0 Comments

We ran a new route that seemed to be pretty good and nobody got lost!  We left the flagpole and went down South Dr to Lincoln Dr, then exited campus and ran to the end of Lincoln, left on Garfield, right on Roosevelt, right on Greentree, back into campus and along South Dr to the flagpole.  Very good 3 mile route for those that want to get out!

  • Looking for running partners-Brunswick area

    Written by Cindy / on 07/28/2010 / 0 Comments

    Hi Gang,

I just moved up to the Brunswick, MD area, about 6 miles from Harper's Ferry by the C&O Canal towpath.  Do any of you live out that way or know anyone looking for a running partner out that way?

It would be great to find someone to run or bike with in the evenings and on weekends. Let me know if you have any leads for me. I used to belong to the Frederick Steeple Chasers and may hook up with them again, although Frederick is about half an hour away.

    Cheers!

  • Enlisting in the Navy - May 11

    Written by David / on 05/12/2010 / 0 Comments

Well it was fitting that the day we ran onto the National Naval Medical Center that we also go tons of water to come along with us...in the form of rain.  There was a very good group of regulars and some new faces through the Couch-to-5k program.

The regulars ran onto the NNMC campus, right on Palmer Rd, went right at the end of the road all the way around the circle path, then to the other side of Palmer where a circular track was awaiting us...then back on Palmer, left on Grier past the bowling alley, and a right ..

  • Springing Into Health - May 4th

    Written by David / on 05/11/2010 / 0 Comments

Today the campus runners all met at the club's booth set up at the NIH Spring Into Health event.  It was a nice HOT day and we ran into Rock Creek Park.  There were about 10 runners and luckily the booth next to us had some water to spare for our runners.  Looking forward to the run next week!

    Written by David / on 04/13/2010 / 0 Comments

True runners enjoy the elements, especially the rain!  A group of about 9 NIHers ran all over NIH using the Campus Branch route.  The rain did not scare us off!  Everybody was also looking foward to the big charity race tomorrow which should be a lot of fun!

  • NIH's Version of Stairway To Heaven - April 6, 2010

    Written by David / on 04/06/2010 / 1 Comment

Today, the group ran up and down many, many, and did I say MANY stairs on the NIH campus.  We started off running up and down the Bldg 1 stairs, down Wilson Dr sidewalk to another staircase back to Center Dr, then over to the stairs in front of the stone building, followed by those in front of Bldg 50, then over to all 7 flights of the stairs in the MLP-9 garage, then back to Center Dr and the steps in front of the North entrance of Bldg 10, then over to West Dr and a loop around North court ..

  • Doin' a Figure 8 on Old Georgetown

    Written by David / on 03/30/2010 / 0 Comments

Turned out to be a great day for a run, even with the wind!  We did a new 5k route that took us from the campus, across Cedar Ln into the neighborhood, up to Old Georgetown, U-turn at Beach, right on Johnson Ave into the other neighborhood, around Hempstead and Oakmont, back down Cedar Ln all the way to Rockvill Pike and back to the flagpole using Wilson Dr entrance.  I hope others can beging making it out as the Spring running season gears up!

  • Ice Cream Social Run - March 24, 2010

    Written by David / on 03/23/2010 / 0 Comments

Well if you did not run with us today, you missed out!  We ran out to Ben and Jerry's in Downtown Bethesda for our free ice cream cone today!  Everybody enjoyed this delicious delight because we got to burn some calories getting out there, gain those calories back, and then burned them off again on the way back to campus.  To the victor goes the spoils!
